Personal life

Droupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda Village, Mayurbhanj District, Odisha to Biranchi Narayan Tudu into a Santali tribal family. Both his father and grandfather were elected sarpanch under the Panchayati Raj system.
Droupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker who died in 2014. The couple had two deceased sons and a daughter. She lost her husband and two children within 4 years. [7] Spiritually, Murmu was associated with the Brahma Kumaris.

Teaching Profession

Murmu started out as a teacher before entering state politics. She has worked as an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Comprehensive Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur and as a junior researcher at the Odisha Government Irrigation Department.

Political Career

Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected advisor to the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. Murmu became chairman of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000
During the BJP-Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, she was Minister of State for Trade and Transport from March 6, 2000 to August 6, 2002 and Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002 to May. 16th, 2004

Governor of Jharkhand

Murmu was sworn in as Governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015, becoming the first female governor of Jharkhand.
As governor in 2017, Murmu refused to pass an act passed by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly that would make amendments to the Chhotanagpur Lease Act 1908 and the Santhal Pargana Lease Act 1949. The law aimed to grant the tribes the right to use their lands for commercial purposes. while ensuring that ownership of the land does not change. Murmu demanded an explanation from the BJP government led by Raghubar Das about the changes it would bring to the benefit of the tribes.
